Shanghai Composite Index breaks 2,400-point mark

BEIJING, Dec. 25  -- The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, a major index of Chinese shares, exceeded 2,400 points Monday morning, the first time in five years.

Powered by finance shares such as those of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange have each registered a growth of more than 2 percent during the morning session.
