Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) and Legend Silicon Corp., two U.S. information technology companies, have opened a joint design laboratory in China to develop reference designs for the country's emerging mobile TV market.
The Shanghai-based design lab, adjacent to the campus of the supercity's prestigious Fudan University, will provide such front-end solutions as antennas, tuners, demodulators and MPEG2 TS interfaces to allow OEMS and ODMS to quickly equip mobile terminal products to receive terrestrial digital TV broadcasts. The mobile terminal products include portable media players, PDAs, laptop PCs, automotive displays and smart phones.
The demodulator technology of Legend Silicon, a supplier of silicon solutions for broadband wireless broadcasting, will be combined with low-power RF tuners of Analog Devices, a provider of high-performance semiconductors for signal processing applications. Legend's demodulators support China's GB-2006 terrestrial digital TV standard, which covers both fixed and mobile applications.
The joint lab is developing low power, small-sized, portable and mobile solutions for GB-2006. But ADI is not endorsing or promoting one particular Chinese mobile standard. The company is supporting customers for all the proposed Chinese handset TV standards, including DMB-TH's handset mode, STiMi and T-MMB, according to the product line director for ADI's high-speed converter group.
The design lab is headed by ADI's Wang Xiaolin, who works in the company's high-speed signal processing business unit and has experience in large-scale digital system and IC development for networking and telecommunications applications.
"ADI is poised to meet the pent-up market demand for mobile content in China," said Howard Cheng, vice president for Greater China operations of ADI. "The opening of this joint lab with Legend Silicon is ... to help our customers [in China] prepare for the rapid and substantial deployment of mobile TV services, which we believe are on the cusp of becoming a mass-market opportunity."
