Recent reports state that at the communications meeting entitled "Building Internet Civilization" in Beijing on January 29, the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center (CIIRC) has received a total of over 140,000 public reports and complaints in 2006.

According to Hu Qiheng, chairman of the Internet Society of China (ISA), the ISA has supervised websites to take the initiative to delete unhealthy information, pictures, topics, columns, channels and forums. The China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center, sponsored by the China Internet Information Service Commission of the Internet Society of China, issued 429 pieces of "Notice to Delete Illegal and Harmful Information" in 2006 and notified web hosts to delete various illegal and harmful information 2,745 times.

Sources say that there is a large gap between the amount of illegal and harmful information and the number of public reports and complaints. This is mainly because there are many repeated reports, the chance of which is increased due to the long regulatory process and the limited enforcement power of the CIIRC.

Founded on June 10, 2004, the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Centre (CIIRC) is sponsored by the Internet Information Service Commission of the Internet Society of China, a non-governmental organization registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China. The CIIRC is supported by the Ministry of Information Industry, the Ministry of Public Security, and the State Council Information Office of the People's Republic of China.

The CIIRC receives public reports and complaints through the website net.china.cn about illegal and harmful information on the Internet within the borders of China.

The CIIRC is mainly focused on contents harmful to the healthy growth of minors, such as obscenity and pornography, gambling, violence, terror, criminal abetting, and contents that spread ethnic hatred, libel, violate others' rights, and violate intellectual property rights.
