Tencent is launching an internal test of a new type of instant messaging software. The initiative comes as the company is seeking a change in image and looking to capture high-end Internet users. Currently, the majority of Tencent's QQ are middle-low-end users.

The internal code name of this new product is the "Hummer Plan" with its complimentary software temporarily entitled "QQ Hummer". Tencent is imitating its main rival Microsoft MSN in the design of the interface and functional features of the "QQ Hummer".  With this new platform, the company is aiming to break the stronghold MSN has on the high-end Internet user market.

Industry insiders argue that by implementing the "Hummer Plan", Tencent aims to provide users with instant messaging software that integrates real-time communication, relationship management and value-added business features. In addition to this, the software is designed to be simplistic in its operational interface so as to meet the utility habit of middle-high-end users.

Until now, Tencent offers three types of IM (instant messaging) software —"QQ", "TM" and "Hummer", directed at three different sub-markets, which are families, enterprises and adolescent users.

Observers say that Tencent's plan to make a breakthrough in the high-end market by way of the "QQ Hummer" will face tough challenges, as in addition to MSN, "Google Talk", "Fetion" and others are staunch competitors.

At present, "QQ Hummer" is undergoing limited internal testing and will be sent to a limited number of users who are specifically invited to partake in the trial.
