China, the world's biggest soybean importer, boosted overseas purchases of the commodity by 44 percent in January, the Beijing-based Customs Office said yesterday. Imports rose to 2.43 million metric tons in the month ended on January 31 compared with a year earlier, the office said on its Website.
Soybean imports into the world's fastest growing major economy grew by 6.3 percent last year to 28.3 million tons. The crop is a key source of protein for China's farm animals. Exports of corn more than doubled to 940,000 tons in January, compared with a year earlier, the Customs said.
