Google Gmail lifted its invitation-only restrictions on February 14th and is now opened to all comers.

Since its launch in April, 2004, Gmail has been adding new functions for this free mail service, but was still in the testing stages. At present, Gmail has instant messaging software “Google Talk”, calendar and an anti-junk mail function.
In the past, users wouldn’t have the opportunity to register with Gmail until invited. Currently, Gmail is offering 2.8 gigabytes of storage for its mail users.

Google positions Gmail as one of its gateways to Google’s other services.
