BEIJING, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A 29-year-old woman's obsessive pursuit of Hong Kong movie star Andy Lau ended in tragedy this week after her father committed suicide on Monday.

Yang Lijuan, from Lanzhou, capital city of northwest China's Gansu province, had been infatuated with Lau since the age of 16 when she dropped out of school to become what she termed a "full-time fan".

Her obsession crippled her family's finances. Her mother Du Juying, 54, was also unemployed so the family of three lived on the monthly pension of 2,000 yuan (257 U.S. dollars) of her 68-year-old father Yang Qinji, a retired teacher.

The parents failed to dissuade their daughter from her hero-worshipping and, driven by poverty,

Yang Qinji sold the house and even thought of selling one of his kidneys to fund his daughter's "career".

They decided to fulfil their daughter's wish to meet the movie star and traveled to Hong Kong on March 19 where they lived in a McDonald's. Yang Lijuan finally met Lau but only as part of a group. Yang labeled the meeting unsatisfactory and demanded a private meeting.

At his wits end, her father drowned himself in Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong after leaving a 12-page suicide letter blaming the actor. "Andy Lau ... you are selfish and hypocritical ... my daughter has wasted her adolescence and we are living in heavy debt ... are you not guilty for this?"

Yang Lijuan is unrepentant. She has returned from Hong Kong with her mother and has insisted that she should meet Lau again.

"It is my father's last wish," she said, "I will not bring my father's body home unless Andy Lau pays a memorial visit and prostrates himself before my father."

Andy Lau made an announcement on Wednesday saying he would not pay the visit. "We have conveyed our condolences and what they should do now is return home and turn over a new leaf," he said.
