Datang International Power Generation Co., China's second-largest electricity producer, said 2006 profit rose 14.7 percent as the utility increased generation to meet energy demand.
Net income climbed to 2.71 billion yuan ($350.4 million), or 0.48 yuan a share, from 2.36 billion, or 0.46 yuan, a year earlier, the Beijing-based company said in a statement to the Shanghai stock exchange today. That's lower than the median estimate of 2.74 billion yuan in a Bloomberg survey of 11 analysts. Sales increased 38 percent to 24.8 billion yuan.
China, the world's second-biggest electricity user after the U.S., experienced a fourth year of power shortages in 2006 as an economic growth rate of 10.7 percent boosted demand beyond capacity at times of peak consumption. The utility generated 32 percent more power last year.
