China Team, a rookie entrant, upset top-ranked BMW-Oracle for its first win in America's Cup qualifying after the headsail of the U.S. team's boat became unattached.
China Team's sailors raised their arms in the air and celebrated with high-fives as they won by 3 minutes, 15 seconds off the coast of Valencia, Spain.
Italy's Luna Rossa beat Sweden's Victory Challenge to tie BMW-Oracle atop the standings. Spain's Desafio Espanol beat Italy's +39 Challenge by one second to rise to third above Team New Zealand, which has two matches in hand.
The 11 challengers are vying for the right to face Switzerland's defending champion Alinghi from June 23. They face off in round-robin racing through May 7, with the top four advancing to the semifinals.
China Team's 14 million-euro ($19.1 million) budget is the smallest of the challengers.
