The Dalai Lama, considered "splittist" by the Chinese government, has announced in the United States that he plans to retire.
He already views himself as semi-retired, but, "Within a few years' time, I will retire completely."The Dalai Lama has been a controversial figure in China. He fled from Tibet in 1959 and is accused of trying to fight for "Tibetan Independence." Nonetheless, he has won accolades for his humanitarian work worldwide, including winning the Nobel Peace Price in 1989.
The Dalai Lama says he wants greater autonomy, not independence, for his predominantly Buddhist homeland.
