MONTREAL–Newly minted Olympian Colin Russell of Oakville is being coached by someone with a lifetime ban – his father.

Controversial swim coach Cecil Russell is barred from coaching because he was twice convicted for being involved in major drug rings. He also testified to helping an associate in a steroid ring burn a murder victim's body in a silo beside his home.

Despite all this, the younger Russell said yesterday after qualifying for the Beijing Olympics with a victory in the men's 200-metre freestyle that his father still coaches him, along with Byron MacDonald of the University of Toronto.

"My dad is the main, most integral coach, but Byron has always been there for me, travels with me, I train at his pool most of the time, but my dad always writes my workouts," said the new Olympian.
