Shanghai Book City had a daily influx of 50,000 people on Thursday and Friday, nearly twice as many as the record numbers that flooded the store during the Spring Festival.
Bookstore managers said many customers were attracted by SBC's book promotion sales during the May Day holiday.
"The rapid increase of visitors exceeded our expectations," Shen Yongyao, deputy general manager of SBC, said Friday.
He said the previous record of 30,000 visitors was during the Spring Festival on February 7.
To attract buyers during the holiday, Shanghai Book City launched a promotion for 200 kinds of books - including novels, literature collections, fairy tales and health manuals - which were discounted by 15 percent.
Shen said his bookstore sold 1 million yuan worth of books (US$143,102) on May 1, 10 percent more than last year. Many Shanghai-related books were sold out where, previously, such explanatory books were not popular.
The shortened holiday period contributed to a sales increase for other city-based commerce, experts said.
Many locals chose to walk around the city instead of planning long-distance trips.
According to an estimate by the city's household appliance association, the city's sales volume of household electrical appliances and digital products would increase 65 percent during the holiday.
