Despite international focus on the devastation in Myanmar, that's the message international aid organizations have given to China, a country thought to have the domestic resources necessary to respond to the earthquake.

"They're well organized, and they've developed good response capacities because they do have a history of earthquakes and other disasters in China," said Stephanie Bunker, spokeswoman for the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Beijing has not yet made any formal requests for assistance to other governments or aid organizations, but a United Nations disaster assessment team of five to nine people is ready to go into the area at the government's request, Ms. Bunker said.
