BEIJING, Oct 6 (Reuters) - China's dairy industry suffersfrom chaotic production and lax oversight, the government saidon Monday, announcing toughened rules after tainted milkproducts left thousands ill and shook confidence in"made-in-China."

Premier Wen Jiabao presided over the meeting of the StateCouncil Standing Committee, or cabinet, which announced rulesintended to ensure the safety of milk products, the governmentreported on its website (www.gov.cn).

The announcement was the government's latest move in acampaign to calm alarmed domestic and foreign consumers afterinfant milk powder adulterated with the industrial chemicalmelamine was found to have killed four children and left manythousands more ill with kidney problems and complications.
