ZTE Corp (SHE: 000063, HKG: 0763), a mobile handset maker in China, will put off launch of its OPhone handset to the first quarter of 2010, ZTE TD product manager Zang Hongxing told Tech.qq.com Thursday. The delay was due to a further research on the product's market positioning and competitiveness in the years following the launch, Zang explained. The OPhone uses the Open Mobile System developed by China Mobile (NYSE: CHL, HKG: 0941) to challenge China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU, SHA: 600050, HKG: 0762) introduction of Apple's iPhone to the mainland. China Mobile has outsourced production of the OPhone to several handset makers. Lenovo Mobile, unveiled their TD-SCDMA OPhone, O1, which was expected to have a price tag of ¥5,000 ($1 = ¥6.8). Lenovo Mobile CEO Lv Yan said its OPhone targets high wage earners. No timetable was given for when it is available for sale.
