FORMER prime minister John Howard has become the latest high profile politician to have a shoe thrown at him after an Australian expatriate hurled a Doc Martens at him during a speech at Cambridge University.
Mr Howard was preparing to speak on the topic of "leadership in the new century" at the Cambridge Student Union's debating chamber last Friday when a man in the crowd accused him of being racist before trying to hit him with a Doc Martens boot.
Witness Matthew Jago told The Tab student website the heckler was a white male with a long blond ponytail who had appeared visibly angry as he shouted the word "racist" at the speaker, but "didn't really seem to know what he should do".
As the former Liberal leader continued unperturbed, introducing himself with his accomplishments of 12 years as prime minister, the man reportedly again jumped to his feet and yelled, "I was ashamed to be an Australian for that entire ...
