A special Christmas Eve dinner was also prepared for inmates comprising of roast mutton, chicken, potatoes and pizza. According to Shanghai Daily, all foreigners in prisons "are treated almost the same as their Chinese counterparts". In the same breath though, it adds that foreign prisoners enjoy "international living standards" in line with prisoner rights regulations prescribed by the UN, including daily showers, sports facilities and medical services. In case you're wondering about living conditions in there, each ward comes equipped with a showera and houses about ten inmates. Email access is provided so prisoners can keep in touch with their family. Shanghai-based photographer Stephen Yang will be taking professional portraits (lights and everything) of party guests chilling with Santa in Santa's VIP room (behind the first-floor bar). All party-goers are welcome ... and it doesn't cost you a thing. We'll post the pics on Shanghaiist early next week.(Stephen promises the photo quality on Saturday will be much higher than the Polaroid that is attached to this post, which Stephen had nothing to do with.
Chinese state-owned media have been going on ad nauseum lately marking the 30th anniversary of China's market reforms. When Deng Xiaoping launched his open door policy, he undoubted had this village in mind, Huaxi, 100 miles north of Shanghai in Jiangsu Province, which is commonly known today as China's richest village. Melissa Chan of Al Jazeera visited the village, and found people there living in huge houses complete with all the latest home appliances and cars and what have you. Life appears to be so good there we ourselves were momentarily tempted to move there.Despite all this wealth though, village party officials recognised that the bulk of residents would still not have the chance to travel overseas, so they decided to bring the world to them by building things like the Sydney Opera House, the Arc of Triumph, Tudor-style mansions, and yes, even the Statue of Liberty (albeit one that looks very Chinese) right in their own backyards. All this seems to have paid of...

Payment of Maids in Guangzhou Drops by 10%

As the Spring Festival approaches a new problem has arisen in Guangzhou – too many maids and not enough work. The number of households in Guangzhou that currently employ maids is 20% lower than before, while at the same time 20% more maids are rushing into the field. Consequently, maid salaries have dropped by 10%, according to Guangzhou Daily. Impact of financial ‘tsunami’ One reason why maids are receiving lower pay this year is because more housework is being done by out-of-work people forced to stay home under the impact of the financial ‘tsunami’. Simultaneously, as companies in the Pearl River Delta close down and lay off workers, more women are looking for work as maidservants in an already glutted market. “The flourishing of maid service has passed,” said Aunt Lin, an experienced maidservant from Guangxi Province working in Guangzhou. “Last year was a golden period for maidservants. Most of us were earning 1200 ...

While today's young men do try to get in touch with their feminine side, few would go to the extreme of wearing miniskirts. At least not in public places. But Ah Lin, 30, a salesman who works near Dongmen, often strolls in Shenzhen's Dongmen in a miniskirt. Ah Lin talked to the Southern Metropolis Daily after a picture of him in a white T-shirt and a golden miniskirt was published by the newspaper earlier this month. "I love women's clothes. I used to feel very upset about that, but now I have finally accepted the fact," said Ah Lin, which is a pseudonym to protect his privacy. "I love to stroll on streets in women's clothing, but I would always wear sunglasses to avoid being recognized by friends," he said. Ah Lin said he developed the hobby in Shanghai eight years ago. "I was very excited when I put on my first white skinny trousers. But then I fell into extreme horror. I thought I had some problems. "In 2006, I decided to change back to men's wear. I t...

The pioneering DJ, currently with cutting edge label Warp Records, has since moved on from his critically-acclaimed deep ambient music to the dark synthetic bass bleeps of Detroit-inspired instrumental hip hop.Known for his multiple monikers, Pritchard's current reincarnation is Harmonic 313, so named after the frequency produced by planets turning on their axes adapted to the Detroit telephone area code 313.Catch the electronic groove guru in action this Saturday at The Shelter for the first time in Shanghai. In the meantime, it's probably a good idea to go solve some color-coded speak-and-spell puzzles so as to lay your hands on a bonus unreleased track. But it is really hard to list China's changes, because there are so many," Dashan, a Canadian national who has become a bona fide celebrity in China, said during a recent interview in Toronto. "For the past 24 years, I have been closely tied with China.

The average cost for individual outpatient treatment in Guangzhou rose to 170 RMB (25 USD) per visit from July to September, 9.86% higher than the same period of last year, according to a third quarter medical expense report released yesterday by the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Public Health. A patient receives treatment during hospitalization at a hospital in Guangzhou. (Xinhua)The average cost of hospitalization also increased by 9.58% to almost 1,000 RMB (147 USD) per day. The rise in medical costs seems odd since most prices did not surge during the second half this year. An official from the bureau said the increases have resulted for complicated reasons. He also added that the authorities will further investigate the matter and soon announce the causes publicly. (By Ronald Li and Stephen Roach) [More Guangzhou News]
