WEST Australian Newspapers says circulation of its flagship newspaper is on the rise but not because of discounting its price.
Chief executive Chris Wharton told shareholders on Wednesday the media group expected to deliver a third straight quarter of year-on-year circulation growth for The West Australian newspaper during the December quarter. The company achieved a second straight quarter of circulation growth in September, compared to the corresponding periods last year, for both its Monday-to-Friday editions and Saturday edition. "That's significant," Mr Wharton told the annual general meeting in Perth. "It's the first time in 15 years that consecutive increases (in circulation) have been achieved. "This has not been achieved by discounting paper sales to ramp up circulation. "We have actually reduced the number of discounted papers in the system ... for the past three quarter periods." He said a third consecutive quarter of year-on-y...

TRIPLE Olympic champion Jodie Henry will today call time on her swimming career.
The star of the 2004 Athens Games is set to hand in her retirement form to Swimming Australia today. The 25-year-old struggled with motivational problems throughout her career and never reached the same heights following her superb week in Greece five years ago. Henry won the prized 100m freestyle title and anchored Australia to victory in the 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relay in Athens. She also collected three gold medals at world championships and four gold medals at Commonwealth Games. Henry at one stage held the Olympic, world championship and Commonwealth crowns in the 100m freestyle. She missed the 2008 Beijing Olympics because of a pelvic complaint that hampered her preparations before the selection trials. Her retirement does not come as a surprise but along with Libby Trickett's decision to have a break from the sport, it highlights Australia's dwindling sprint stocks. AA...

Forty million potted flowers are needed for the massive display, much to the delight of floral suppliers, who saw their business blossom. The Beijing Olympics in 2008 created numerous jobs and business opportunities during its lengthy preparations. This flower display may not last beyond the country's National Day celebration but it is expected to serve as more than just a flower bed. The demand for flowers to dress up the city is said to have kept at least 10,000 Beijing farmers busy, and given a much needed boost to the floral industry.Feng Yanxin, Manager of Beijing Caoqiao Yangzhen Planting Base of Flowers and Trees, knows a...

DISGRACED cyclist Chris Jongewaard has been granted the right to appeal the sentence he was given for running down a fellow rider while drunk.
Jongewaard, 30, was jailed for at least nine months by the South Australian District Court earlier this month after being found guilty of aggravated driving without due care and leaving the scene of an accident. But his lawyer Ian White, on Monday, told the SA Criminal Court of Appeal the two-year head sentence was manifestly excessive and Judge Wayne Chivell erred by not suspending the nine-month non-parole period. Mr White said Judge Chivell had placed too much emphasis on the discretionary element required in sentencing. Questions were also raised as to whether Jongewaard had, in fact, fled the scene of the 2007 accident. Mr White told the court Jongewaard, who was without a mobile telephone at the time of the accident, had "indirectly helped get someone to the scene of the accident swiftly''.
